A Party Once Again!

When youthful fire was in my blood
I knew of Democratic champions,
Of Jack and Bobby who firmly stood,
And bravely called for equality and freedom;
And then I dreamt I yet might see
Their like arise again,
And Dems, so oft a patsy, be.
A Party once again!

A Party once again,
A Party once again,
Our Dems, so oft a patsy, be
A Party once again!

And from that time, through deepest woe,
That hope made the burden light,
Ne'er could any summer’s brightest glow
Outshine that radiance bright;
It seemed to drift above my head
In forum, field and fane,
Its angel voice sang round my bed,
A Party once again!

It whispered too, that freedom's ark
The Republic high and holy,
Would be profaned by feelings dark
And passions vain or lowly;
The Republic comes from a noble band,
And needs a worthy train;
And virtuous men must take their stand
A Party once again!

So, as I grew from boy to man,
I bent me to that bidding
My spirit of each venal plan
And spiteful passion ridding;
For, thus I hoped some day to aid,
Oh, can such hope be vain?
My dear Democrats now remade
A Party once again!

A Party once again,
A Party once again,
Our Dems, so oft a patsy, be
A Party once again!
